Leo Baeck (1873-1956) war Rabbiner, Intellektueller und der offizielle Sprecher des deutschen Judentums während des Holocausts. In seinem neuen Buch The Jewish Imperial Imagination zeigt der Historiker Yaniv Feller, auf welch vielfältige Weise das deutsche imperiale Unternehmen Baecks religiöses und politisches Denken und das moderne Judentum im Allgemeinen geprägt hat. Sein Buch ist das erste, das Baecks religiöses Denken als politisch begreift und es in den kaiserlichen Kontext jener Zeit einordnet, der in Diskussionen über das moderne jüdische Denken oft ignoriert wird.
Im Gespräch zwischen Yaniv Feller und der Kulturwissenschaftlerin Liliana Ruth Feierstein, werden neue und aktuelle Fragen über deutsch-jüdische Vorstellungen vom Orient als Kolonisationsraum diskutiert.

Vortragende
Yaniv Feller is an assistant professor in the Department of Religion and the Bud Shorstein Center for Jewish Studies at the University of Florida. This summer, he is a Dr. Gabriele Meyer/Zeit Foundation fellow at the Institute for the History of German Jews in Hamburg. Yaniv’s book The Jewish Imperial Imagination: Leo Baeck and German-Jewish Thought (Cambridge University Press, 2023) won the 2023 First Book Publication Award of the Association for Jewish Studies. He is also the co-editor of Covenantal Thinking: Essays on the Philosophy and Theology of David Novak (University of Toronto Press, 2024) and has published articles in venues such as the Journal of Religion, New German Critique, and Comparative Studies in Society and History. A former curator in the Jewish Museum Berlin, Yaniv is currently working on a book titled Jew in a Box: The Past and Future of Jewish Museums.
Liliana Ruth Feierstein (Buenos Aires) studied in Buenos Aires, México and Vancouver. PhD in philosophy (Heinrich Heine Universität Düsseldorf). She was postdoctoral researcher by the European Research Council and Fellow at the Seminario Rabínico Latinoamericano. Since 2014 Professor for Transcultural Jewish History at the Humboldt University Berlin and Selma Stern Zentrum für Jüdische Studien.
